The
modern capital
Tunis is
at once a fast expanding modern city reminiscent of the French
protectorate it was and an old town nostalgic about its
ancient past. it is a capital city that is neither very Arab
nor very African. Tunisians might claim that is very European,
which it is not. So the truth might be somewhere in between.
But what is obvious is that Tunis is a highly functional,
effective and clean city. It is an orderly conglomeration of
the old and the new.
Tunis
is not a tourist center, but it is a take off point for the
innumerable tourists going to places like Hammamet, or Sousse.
They often go on a day’s package tour of the city. The Bardo
museum, which has the largest collection of Roman mosaics in
the world, the zoo in the northern part of the city which is
well maintained and houses a great number of animals, and
Zitouna the great mosque are the places usually visited. The
‘Suuq’ is also a great attraction.
